Hikes in Sainte-Victoire
Mont Sainte-Victoire, immortalized by Cezanne, is the favorite playground of Aix-en-Provence hikers. The ascent to the Croix de Provence (945m) offers a 360-degree panorama over Provence, from the Luberon to the sea. Several routes lead to the summit, from the most accessible via the south face (starting from the Croix de Provence car park) to the most athletic along the ridges and the Pas de l'Escalette. The GR9 runs along the ridge for the entire length of the massif, offering an 18 km trek with stunning views. The Bimont dam, at the foot of the north face, is an ideal starting point for a 5 km family walk. The Cezanne refuge, halfway up the ascent, provides a welcome rest stop. In summer, the mountain is often closed to hikers due to fire risk — check prefectural regulations before setting out.
