Hikes in Sainte-Baume
The Sainte-Baume massif harbors a unique relict forest in Provence, a remnant of the forests that covered the region millennia ago. Trails wind between the Mediterranean garrigue of the south face and the beech-fir forest of the north face, offering welcome coolness in summer. The highest point, Pic de Bertagne (1,042m), offers stunning views over the Mediterranean coast. The grotto of Mary Magdalene, a pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages, is accessible via a 45-minute wooded trail from the Hotellerie. The Huveaune spring, which feeds the river flowing through Marseille, lies at the foot of the north face and makes for a pleasant walking destination. The massif is particularly recommended in summer, when the beech forest offers 10 to 15 degrees less than the coast. Trails are well-marked and accessible year-round, making it an ideal destination for families.
