Bimont Dam: The Essential Stroll
Distance: 5.8 km | Elevation gain: +120 m | Level: Easy | Duration: 1h30
This is the ideal hike for discovering the Pays d'Aix without overexerting yourself. The Bimont Dam, with its deep blue water at the foot of Sainte-Victoire, offers a stunning spectacle from the very first steps.
The trail loops around the lake along the shore, sometimes under pine trees, sometimes along small rocky ridges with plunging views over the water. The path is wide and well maintained, accessible to the whole family.
The highlight: the view of the southern face of Sainte-Victoire from the dam wall, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns the white rock golden.
Bibemus Quarries: In the Footsteps of Cézanne
Distance: 6.2 km | Elevation gain: +180 m | Level: Easy | Duration: 2h
The Bibemus quarries are those blocks of orange ochre that inspired the cubist canvases of Paul Cézanne. The trail winds between the old stone quarries, where vegetation has reclaimed the cliffs carved by human hands centuries ago.
The path alternates between shady woodland and open clearings with views of Sainte-Victoire. You instantly understand why Cézanne set up his easel here: the colours are extraordinary, especially at sunrise and sunset.
The highlight: the interplay of light in the quarries, where the ochre of the rocks contrasts with the dark green of the pines.
Zola Dam and the Oppidum d'Entremont
Distance: 6.9 km | Elevation gain: +200 m | Level: Easy | Duration: 2h15
Less well known than the Bimont Dam, the Zola Dam — yes, built by Émile Zola's father — is a hidden gem nestled in the Infernet valley. The hike combines historical heritage and unspoiled nature.
The route passes through the Celto-Ligurian oppidum of Entremont, a major archaeological site dating from the 2nd century BC. You walk literally through 2,200 years of history before descending to the dam, set in a lush green hollow.
The highlight: the tranquillity of the place. Even at weekends, this trail remains far less crowded than the Sainte-Victoire classics.
Sainte-Victoire Ridge (Croix de Provence)
Distance: 7.3 km | Elevation gain: +650 m | Level: Challenging | Duration: 3h30
This is THE emblematic hike of Aix-en-Provence. The ascent to the Croix de Provence, at 945 m altitude, is a rite of passage for every hiker in the region.
The starting point is typically the Refuge Cézanne car park (Route du Tholonet). The climb is sustained — allow about 1h30 of steady uphill — but the trail is well defined and safe. The steepest sections are equipped with handrails. Good high-cut hiking boots are strongly recommended.
At the summit, the panorama is breathtaking: the plain of Aix, the Chaîne de l'Étoile, the Calanques massif, and on a clear day, Mont Ventoux to the north.
The highlight: the sense of achievement at the foot of the cross, facing a 360° panorama.
Saint-Antonin Aqueduct from Le Tholonet
Distance: 6.5 km | Elevation gain: +150 m | Level: Easy | Duration: 1h45
A bucolic walk along the Roman aqueduct that once supplied Aix-en-Provence with water. The trail follows the line of this ancient infrastructure through the Tholonet countryside, between vineyards, olive groves, and Provençal country houses.
This is an ideal hike for autumn afternoons or spring mornings, when the low-angle light elevates the landscape. The terrain is flat and regular, perfect for a family outing or a first hike.
The highlight: the pastoral atmosphere and absolute quiet, just 15 minutes from the centre of Aix.
Pic des Mouches: The Roof of Sainte-Victoire
Distance: 9 km | Elevation gain: +700 m | Level: Challenging | Duration: 4h
The Pic des Mouches stands at 1,011 m — the highest point of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, and yet far less frequented than the Croix de Provence. If you are looking for solitude at altitude, this is the place.
The approach is from the eastern flank, starting from Vauvenargues. The trail climbs steadily through the garrigue and then through an oak forest before reaching the summit ridge. The final metres are airy and offer an even wider panorama than from the Croix de Provence.
The highlight: standing at the top of Sainte-Victoire, alone in the world, with a view that stretches all the way to the Mediterranean.
Sainte-Victoire via Vauvenargues
Distance: 12 km | Elevation gain: +550 m | Level: Intermediate | Duration: 4h30
Vauvenargues is the village where Picasso chose to live and where he is buried. This hike starts from the village, approaching Sainte-Victoire from its northern flank, wilder and less frequented.
The trail crosses a dense forest of downy oaks before joining the ridge via a progressive route. The difficulty is well spread across the whole walk, with no particularly technical section.
The highlight: the forest atmosphere of the northern flank, very different from the more mineral and Mediterranean southern face.
Plateau du Cengle
Distance: 15.8 km | Elevation gain: +450 m | Level: Intermediate | Duration: 5h
The Plateau du Cengle is a vast flat area situated at the foot of the southern face of Sainte-Victoire. It is the best place to admire the mountain in all its splendour without having to climb it.
The route forms a large loop alternating between the grassy plateau, stands of Aleppo pines, and olive groves. The elevation gain is moderate and well distributed. It is an ideal full-day hike for those who want scenery without the technical difficulty of the ridge.
The highlight: the frontal view of the southern face of Sainte-Victoire, monumental, with its white cliffs rising like a 300-metre wall.
Provençal Hills from Le Tholonet
Distance: 11.5 km | Elevation gain: +350 m | Level: Easy | Duration: 3h30
This loop starting from Le Tholonet is a concentrated dose of everything Provence does best: gentle hills covered in garrigue, the scent of thyme and rosemary, and open views over the Aix countryside.
The route is ideal for a half-day of relaxed walking. The trail is well signposted and the terrain presents no technical difficulty. It is the perfect hike for introducing someone to walking in the natural world.
The highlight: the panoramas over Sainte-Victoire and the Aix plain, accessible without intense effort.
Tour of Sainte-Victoire: The Challenge
Distance: 18.5 km | Elevation gain: +950 m | Level: Challenging | Duration: 7h
The complete circuit of Sainte-Victoire is the holy grail of hikers from Aix. 18.5 km, nearly 1,000 m of positive elevation gain, a full day of walking that reveals every facet of this mythical mountain.
The route follows the GR9 along the ridge before descending via the northern flank and returning via the southern piedmont. You will pass the Croix de Provence, the Pic des Mouches, the Refuge Cézanne, and a dozen viewpoints each more spectacular than the last.
The highlight: the feeling of having completed the full circuit of Provence's most iconic natural landmark.
