Gérardmer and its glacial lakes are the anchor point. Xonrupt-Longemer, Le Valtin and La Bresse give onto the High Vosges: rounded ballons, high chaumes and glacier-carved cirques.

Ventron and La Bresse open the paths towards the Hohneck, the massif's third summit, reached from the Vosges side across the chaumes while its east face drops as cliffs into Alsace.

Sandstone and granite share the range, and the Club Vosgien maintains one of the best-waymarked trail networks in Europe, with its coloured rectangles, discs and triangles.

When to go — May to October for the ridges; winter is snowy and switches to snowshoes and cross-country skiing, both popular at La Bresse and Gérardmer.

OpenRando lists 164 hiking routes in Vosges. The median distance is 9.3 km, and most routes fall between 4.4 and 16.4 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 244 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 572 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.
