The Var divides between the Sainte-Baume and the coast. Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume gives onto the massif's relict forest — beech and lime at 700 metres in the middle of Provence — and the Mary Magdalene grotto, a pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages.

Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Bandol offer the shoreline: the customs path, discreet coves and terraced vineyards running down to the sea.

Inland, Tourves and Saint-Julien open onto the Haut-Var, drier and lonelier, among holm oak, hill forts and garrigue valleys.

When to go — October to May; in summer access to the Var massifs is regulated daily for fire risk, the Sainte-Baume included.

OpenRando lists 164 hiking routes in Var. The median distance is 8.7 km, and most routes fall between 4.5 and 15.9 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.
