The French Vexin supplies the finest starts. La Roche-Guyon, set against a chalk cliff above the Seine, gives the department's most spectacular start, with its medieval keep hollowed into the slope.

Parmain and Méry-sur-Oise line the Oise and give onto the Auvers slopes, the ones Van Gogh painted in his final months. The paths cross wheat fields and orchards.

Montlignon and Saint-Leu-la-Forêt open onto the Montmorency forest, the largest chestnut wood in the Paris region, reachable by train and threaded with quiet valleys.

When to go — All year; autumn is superb in the Montmorency forest, and the Vexin slopes stay walkable in winter.
