Forest and rivers, and little else — which is plenty. The Bercé forest, in the south of the department around Marigné-Laillé and Mayet, ranks among the finest oak woods in France: tall stands, riding avenues, and trees approaching forty metres.

To the north-west, Sillé-le-Guillaume opens onto the Alpes Mancelles, where sandstone and bedrock break the surface along the Sarthe river. The relief stays modest but is real enough, with viewpoints unexpected for the region.

Between the two, the Loir valley and the outskirts of Le Mans offer easy loops, often flat, between villages, mills and riverbanks. No summit here makes the headlines, and that is exactly what makes the Sarthe restful.
