The Rhône makes up for its small size with relief right on the doorstep. The Monts d'Or, from Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or, are where Lyon goes walking: golden limestone, dry-stone walls, steep lanes and, on a clear day, a view of the city and the Alps.

Further west, the Monts du Lyonnais around Yzeron offer genuine forest climbs and open ridges. Four or five hundred metres of gain come quickly.

The remaining starts — Décines-Charpieu, Brignais, Lyon itself — give waterside routes along the Rhône and the Saône, flat and reachable on public transport.

When to go — All year; spring and autumn suit the Monts d'Or best, summer being dry and short on shade along the ridges.

OpenRando lists 786 hiking routes in Rhône. The median distance is 8.9 km, and most routes fall between 5.0 and 15.4 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 156 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 416 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or, Yzeron, Décines-Charpieu, Lyon 02, Brignais, Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d'Or. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
