The Pyrénées-Orientales fit the sea and the high mountains into an hour's drive. On the Côte Vermeille, Collioure, Port-Vendres and Argelès-sur-Mer give a coastal path cut into schist, between terraced vines and coves.

Just behind, the Albères massif — Laroque-des-Albères — closes the Spanish border with a ridge wooded in cork oak and beech, marked by medieval signal towers.

Vernet-les-Bains opens onto the Canigou, the Catalans' emblematic mountain. The climb from the Cortalets hut is long and serious; the peak tops out at 2,784 metres and is visible from the sea.

When to go — The coast and the Albères walk year-round; the Canigou is only really accessible from June to October, and the tramontane can make the ridges very hard going.

OpenRando lists 621 hiking routes in Pyrénées-Orientales. The median distance is 8.7 km, and most routes fall between 4.2 and 16.8 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.
