The Pyrénées-Atlantiques open here mostly on the ocean side. Biarritz, Anglet and Bayonne give the Basque coastal path, cut into the cliff between beaches and rocky points, with the Atlantic swell permanently on your left.

Inland, Macaye and Cambo-les-Bains climb towards the first relief of the Labourd: pastoral hills, bracken, free-roaming pottok ponies and villages of red and white houses. La Rhune and the Artzamendi go in half a day.

The contrast is sharp with the Béarn and the high mountains further south, less represented in this catalogue but far more committing.

When to go — All year on the coast and in the Labourd, helped by the oceanic mildness; autumn gives the best conditions, winter staying wet.

OpenRando lists 400 hiking routes in Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The median distance is 7.6 km, and most routes fall between 3.3 and 15.6 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 91 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 443 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Biarritz, Anglet, Bayonne, Macaye, Cambo-les-Bains, Salies-de-Béarn. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
