Three great forests make the department. Chantilly, Ermenonville and Orry-la-Ville form an almost continuous woodland north of Paris, reachable by train, with oak stands, ponds and riding avenues.

Ermenonville adds its mer de sable and heathland, sandy ground unexpected at this latitude, along with the memory of Rousseau, who spent his last days there.

Further north, Herchies and Orvillers-Sorel give an agricultural Beauvaisis, with more open and less frequented loops between cereal plateaux and quiet valleys.

When to go — Autumn is the best season in the forests. The sandy Ermenonville soils stay walkable even after rain, which rescues winter outings.

OpenRando lists 145 hiking routes in Oise. The median distance is 9.3 km, and most routes fall between 4.8 and 15.9 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

The terrain stays gentle: median elevation gain is 65 m, and even the hilliest routes rarely exceed 148 m. Good ground for long outings without the climbing.

The most common starting points cluster around: Herchies, Orvillers-Sorel, Chantilly, Ermenonville, Orry-la-Ville, Daméraucourt. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
