The river makes the whole department. La Charité-sur-Loire and Pouilly-sur-Loire line the wild river, with sandbanks, wooded islands and a nature reserve protecting terns and beavers.

La Charité, a stage on the Compostela road, adds its Cluniac priory, a World Heritage site; Pouilly gives the vineyard and its flint slopes, directly facing Sancerre on the far bank.

Tracy-sur-Loire and Saint-Andelain complete the picture with the Pouilly-Fumé vineyard and the Loire lateral canal, whose towpaths run dead straight, flat and shaded.

When to go — All year; autumn gives the best vineyard colour, and the Loire banks are best avoided in flood.
