Metz commands most of the starts. The Jouy canal, Scy-Chazelles and Jouy-aux-Arches give flat loops along the water, with the Roman aqueduct at Jouy as the highlight — one of the best preserved in Gaul.

The Côtes de Moselle, west of the city, carry vineyards and orchards on their slopes and open clear views over the valley from Longeville-lès-Metz and Moulins-lès-Metz.

The south-east of the department opens onto the lake country and the pink sandstone of the Northern Vosges, another register entirely — wooded and quiet.

When to go — All year; autumn is the best season on the Moselle slopes, between harvest and colour.
