Two listed sites shape the walking here. Sainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes, one of the most beautiful villages in France, sits on a rock spur William the Conqueror never took: the ramparts stand seventy metres above the Erve valley.

Saulges, below, opens onto the Erve canyon and its decorated caves, the only recognised Palaeolithic rock art site in western France. The valley path links the two.

Elsewhere, Azé, Saint-Fort and Sainte-Gemmes-le-Robert give classic hedgerow country of banks, sunken lanes and small valleys, with the Coëvrons as the only marked relief.

When to go — Favour spring in the Erve valley. Winter remains possible, but the sunken lanes turn heavy.
