Two kinds of ground answer each other: the causses, and the valleys cutting through them. Rocamadour, clinging to its cliff above the Alzou canyon, is the busiest start: both the GR6 and the Compostela route pass through.

The Lot valley, from Cahors to Bouziès and Tour-de-Faure — at the foot of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie — offers the towpath cut into the cliff itself, a passage unique in France, hewn from the rock above the river.

Around Autoire, the Gramat causse delivers limestone cirques, waterfalls and villages in pale stone. The ground is dry, karstic and waterless: carry more than you think.

When to go — April to June and September to October; summer is hot and very busy at Rocamadour and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.
