The reculées are what set this department apart. Les Planches-près-Arbois is the textbook case: a dead-end valley closed by a two-hundred-metre wall, from which the Cuisance pours in falls after rain.

Arbois adds the vineyard — savagnin, vin jaune — on the slopes above the town, with paths reaching the viewpoint in an hour. The contrast between vines and cliff makes the area.

North-west, Dole, Moissey and Monnières give a wholly different Jura: plain, the Chaux forest — one of the largest oak woods in France — and the banks of the Doubs. The ground here is flat.

When to go — April to November; the reculées are at their best in spring when the falls run, and autumn brings the vineyard colour.

OpenRando lists 315 hiking routes in Jura. The median distance is 8.3 km, and most routes fall between 4.1 and 16.0 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 134 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 450 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Dole, Monnières, Les Planches-près-Arbois, Arbois, Moissey, Salins-les-Bains. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
