Three rivers — the Loire, the Cher and the Indre — and for relief, only their slopes. Tours, Amboise and Montlouis-sur-Loire hold most of the routes, alternating Loire embankments, vineyards and woodland.

The tuffeau slope gives the department its character: the white stone has been hollowed out everywhere, into cellars, cave dwellings and mushroom farms. Many trails run along these low cliffs, particularly between Vouvray and Montlouis.
