The Brenne and the southern valleys share the department between them. Mérigny and Ingrandes line the Anglin and the Creuse, rivers cut into limestone, with low cliffs, mills and villages gripping the rock.

The north of the department, around Issoudun, Chârost and Paudy, belongs to the Champagne Berrichonne: a very open cereal plain, with long, level loops.

Between the two, the Brenne regional park lines up more than a thousand ponds, first-rate birdwatching country where the paths run from dyke to dyke.

When to go — All year; spring is the best time in the Brenne for nesting birds, and summer can be dry and exposed on the plain.
