Haute-Corse lives on a contrast: the Balagne and Cap Corse coastline on one side, the high country of the Niolu and the Corte basin on the other. Routes split between L'Île-Rousse, Algajola and Saint-Florent for the sea, Vivario and Albertacce for the interior.

The GR20 crosses the northern, harder half of the department — Vivario is one of its gateways. But most accessible routes lie elsewhere: the Restonica valley, the Niolu bowl around Calacuccia, the laricio pine forest of Valdu Niellu, and the shepherds' paths linking mountain sheepfolds.

On the coast, the customs paths of Cap Corse and the Agriate give short but exposed walks with no water on the way. The local rule applies everywhere here: carry more water than you think you need.

When to go — April–June and September–October on the coast; the high mountains are only really open from late June to October, and summer stays punishing at sea level.

OpenRando lists 1,183 hiking routes in Haute-Corse. The median distance is 7.7 km, and most routes fall between 3.1 and 16.5 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 234 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 747 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Vivario, Saint-Florent, L'Île-Rousse, Albertacce, Algajola, Corbara. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
