The Haut-Rhin sets two slopes against each other. East, the wine route and Hunawihr unroll terraced vineyards, flower-decked villages and short, busy vineyard trails.

West, the High Vosges change the scale. Le Bonhomme, Soultzeren, Munster and Lautenbachzell give onto the chaumes — high pastures above the treeline — and the Route des Crêtes, with the glacial lakes of Forlet and Lauch below.

The Sentier des Roches, between Munster and the Col de la Schlucht, remains the massif's signature route: cut into the cliff, fitted with handrails, and best avoided in the wet.

When to go — May to October on the ridges; winter brings lasting snow to the High Vosges, while the vineyards walk year-round.

OpenRando lists 269 hiking routes in Haut-Rhin. The median distance is 9.3 km, and most routes fall between 4.6 and 17.0 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.
