The Gard lines up four clearly separate landscapes. On the coast, Le Grau-du-Roi and Aigues-Mortes open onto the Petite Camargue: salt pans, lagoons, ramparts and strictly flat walking.

In the centre, the garrigue around Sommières and Vers-Pont-du-Gard carries most of the routes, among thyme, holm oak and dry-stone capitelles. The Pont du Gard is reached on foot through the Gardon gorges.

North, Anduze marks the gateway to the Cévennes: the gradient changes at once, chestnut woods replace the garrigue, and the climbing turns serious.

When to go — Autumn, winter and spring; summer bakes the garrigue and massif access can be closed for fire risk.

OpenRando lists 733 hiking routes in Gard. The median distance is 8.6 km, and most routes fall between 4.7 and 14.8 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 139 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 341 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Le Grau-du-Roi, Anduze, Aigues-Mortes, Vers-Pont-du-Gard, Sommières, Nîmes. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
