Between the Beauce and the Loir valley, two moods pull apart. Chartres and Lèves give loops around the cathedral, whose spire is visible thirty kilometres across the plain, and along the Eure with its washhouses and mills.

Châteaudun, Saint-Maur-sur-le-Loir and Douy line the Loir, a slow river cut into tuffeau, with troglodyte slopes and wet meadows. This is where what little relief the department has can be found.

Elsewhere the Beauce unrolls its cereal horizons, very open walking country where you see a long way but find little shade.

When to go — Shoulder seasons for preference: the Beauce is wind-exposed in winter and utterly shadeless in summer.
