Two settings dominate: the Seine meanders, and the beechwood. Vézillon and Vernon line the river where it winds between chalk cliffs: Les Andelys and Château-Gaillard, Richard the Lionheart's fortress, command one of those bends.

Lyons-la-Forêt opens onto one of the finest beech woods in Europe, more than a hundred square kilometres of cathedral-like stands, with a listed half-timbered village at its centre.

Giverny adds Monet's gardens and the slopes above them, where the views he painted over the valley are still exactly as he saw them.

When to go — Autumn is exceptional in the Lyons forest. Avoid Giverny at the height of summer — the crowds spoil it.

OpenRando lists 56 hiking routes in Eure. The median distance is 10.4 km, and most routes fall between 4.8 and 17.8 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 143 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 362 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Vézillon, Lyons-la-Forêt, Poses, Vernon, Giverny, Les Trois Lacs. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
