The Drôme reads north to south as a transition. At the top, Chamaloc and Die open onto the southern Vercors and the Diois: limestone cirques, passes, and the Col de Rousset tipping from one world into another.

In the middle, Léoncel and the Lente forest carry the Vercors on as a wooded plateau, cool even in summer. This is where the department gives its best climbing — a median 282 metres, high for a French catalogue.

In the south, Dieulefit already announces Provence: lavender, holm oak, hill villages and a different light. The Drôme provençale is best walked outside the hot season.

When to go — April to November; the Vercors holds snow into May at 1,500 m, while the Drôme provençale is pleasanter in spring and autumn.

OpenRando lists 635 hiking routes in Drôme. The median distance is 9.4 km, and most routes fall between 5.0 and 16.2 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

The most common starting points cluster around: Chamaloc, Hauterives, Die, Dieulefit, Léoncel, Saou. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
