The Doubs is a department of blind valleys and springs. Ornans, on the Loue, is Courbet country: limestone cliffs, turquoise water, mills — the painter spent his life on these valleys.

Ouhans gives access to the source of the Loue, a spectacular resurgence bursting from the foot of a hundred-metre wall, and to the Moine de la Vallée viewpoint. These are the department's most walked routes.

Higher up, Pontarlier opens onto the high Jura: spruce forest, pasture, transverse valleys and the Mont d'Or. Besançon is walked by its hills and the Doubs loop around the citadel.

When to go — April to November for comfort; winter brings lasting snow to the high Doubs, opening it to snowshoes and cross-country skiing.

OpenRando lists 714 hiking routes in Doubs. The median distance is 8.4 km, and most routes fall between 4.2 and 15.3 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 187 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 413 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Besançon, Ornans, Beure, Pontarlier, Ouhans, Pont-les-Moulins. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
