The Dordogne concentrates its routes here in the Périgord Noir. Vézac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Beynac and Cénac-et-Saint-Julien line up over a few kilometres of valley, between cliffs, facing castles and river bends.

Sarlat-la-Canéda serves as a base for a dense network climbing onto the causses, crossing walnut groves and dropping back to villages in pale stone. The climbing is modest but constant.

Vitrac and its surroundings give onto the cingles, the tight meanders best seen from the viewpoints — the one at Domme remains the best known.

When to go — April to June and September to October; July and August run hot and the valley gets very busy.

OpenRando lists 339 hiking routes in Dordogne. The median distance is 8.0 km, and most routes fall between 3.5 and 15.6 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.
