The Dordogne valley and the causses carry most of the routes. Argentat-sur-Dordogne and Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne line the river, with flat-bottomed gabares, stone quays and loops climbing the wooded slopes.

Aubazines holds a Cistercian abbey and the Canal des Moines, a medieval aqueduct cut into the cliff for a kilometre and a half and still carrying water: a short but memorable route.
