The Calvados sets two unrelated landscapes side by side. On the coast, from Ouistreham to Deauville by way of Villers-sur-Mer, you walk the D-Day beaches and the Vaches Noires cliffs, thick with fossils. The shoreline is built up, but the coastal path runs unbroken for tens of kilometres.

Inland begins the Suisse Normande, around Le Vey and the Orne valley: wooded gorges, rock escarpments and viewpoints that look nothing like the Normandy of expectation. This is where the department finds its climbing, and by far its finest routes.

Between the two, the Pays d'Auge unrolls hedgerow country, half-timbered manors and orchards. Sunken lanes are plentiful, and often muddy outside the dry season.

When to go — Walkable year-round; spring and autumn are the most pleasant, winter leaving the Pays d'Auge lanes decidedly heavy going.

OpenRando lists 894 hiking routes in Calvados. The median distance is 8.3 km, and most routes fall between 3.7 and 15.8 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 58 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 200 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Caen, Le Vey, Ouistreham, Villers-sur-Mer, Deauville, Courseulles-sur-Mer. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
