Pink sandstone and ruined castles: this is the Northern Vosges. Saverne, La Petite-Pierre and Niederbronn-les-Bains give onto a forested massif dotted with ruined castles perched on rock — the Haut-Barr, the Fleckenstein, the Lichtenberg.

Saint-Nabor opens onto Mont Sainte-Odile and its pagan wall, a ten-kilometre enclosure of sandstone blocks assembled without mortar, still debated as to date. The site stands 500 metres above the Alsace plain.

Oberhaslach leads to the Nideck: a 25-metre waterfall dropping from a rhyolite cliff below the ruins of a double castle. The Club Vosgien network, waymarked since 1872, covers the lot.
