The Aveyron strings together landscapes with nothing in common. Bozouls is built around its trou, a 400-metre entrenched meander carved by the Dourdou, spectacular and reachable on a short loop.

Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac opens onto the Aubrac: a basalt plateau, summer pasture, shepherds' huts and the GR65 to Compostela, one of the most striking stretches of the Le Puy route.

Conques-en-Rouergue, a major stage on that same road, and the Lot valley around Espalion complete the picture with red stone, medieval bridges and sustained gradients.

When to go — May to October on the Aubrac, where snow lies late and fog can drop fast; the valleys walk nearly year-round.

OpenRando lists 442 hiking routes in Aveyron. The median distance is 9.2 km, and most routes fall between 4.7 and 15.9 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 188 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 413 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac, Bozouls, Salles-la-Source, Espalion, Conques-en-Rouergue, Saint Geniez d'Olt et d'Aubrac. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
