The Aude sets lagoons alongside vertiginous citadels. On the coast, Leucate, Gruissan and Peyriac-de-Mer give flat walking between salt pans, disused salt works and boardwalks over brackish water.

In the Corbières, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse and Cucugnan open onto the so-called Cathar castles — Peyrepertuse, Quéribus — perched on limestone arêtes at no trivial altitude. The climbs are short but steep and thoroughly exposed.

Between the two, the garrigue and the Corbières vineyards offer dry, fragrant and often solitary routes.

When to go — October to May; summer bakes and there is no shade in the Corbières, and the tramontane can blow hard on the ridges in any season.

OpenRando lists 218 hiking routes in Aude. The median distance is 8.4 km, and most routes fall between 4.2 and 16.9 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 104 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 533 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Leucate, Gruissan, Peyriac-de-Mer, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, Cucugnan, Bugarach. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
