The Meuse valley concentrates everything. Monthermé, Tournavaux and Fépin line the river where it cuts deep into the Ardennes massif, forming tight meanders between wooded slopes three hundred metres high.

The viewpoints carry names that tell the local legends: the Quatre Fils Aymon, the Roche à Sept Heures, the Longue Roche. These are short, steep climbs from the river, repaid with panoramas over the bends.

Forest dominates throughout — oak, beech, spruce — and the GR12 long-distance path crosses the massif to the Belgian border. Loops run long, a median of 10.6 km — enough to walk for hours without covering the same ground twice.

When to go — April to November; autumn gives the best colour on the slopes, and winter leaves the hillside paths slippery under the leaves.

OpenRando lists 78 hiking routes in Ardennes. The median distance is 10.6 km, and most routes fall between 5.1 and 18.2 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 104 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 524 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Monthermé, Sault-lès-Rethel, Tournavaux, Fépin, Biermes, Tagnon. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
