The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence hold two worlds. In the south, Gréoux-les-Bains, Esparron-de-Verdon and Oppedette give dry Provence: lavender, limestone gorges — those at Oppedette run a hundred and twenty metres deep — and the turquoise Verdon lakes.

In the north, Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye and the Val d'Oronaye tip into high mountain country. The Ubaye valley climbs past 3,000 metres, with border passes, Vauban forts and genuine isolation.

The spread in climbing says it: a median of 241 metres, but a top decile past 950. Read the profile before setting out — the average means nothing here.

When to go — The Verdon and the Valensole plateau walk from October to June; the Ubaye is only really open from June to October.

OpenRando lists 97 hiking routes in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The median distance is 9.6 km, and most routes fall between 4.5 and 18.7 km — from an afternoon loop to a full day out.

On the climbing side, the median elevation gain is 241 m, and the most demanding routes exceed 951 m. Enough range to pick your effort by season and by form.

The most common starting points cluster around: Gréoux-les-Bains, Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye, Esparron-de-Verdon, Oppedette, Val d'Oronaye, La Palud-sur-Verdon. Every route comes with its GPX track, elevation profile and interactive map.
