The Chemin des Dames dominates what the department offers. Craonne, Bouconville-Vauclair and Neuville-sur-Ailette line that ridge where the fighting of 1917 erased whole villages — Craonne was rebuilt elsewhere, and the old site is now an arboretum.

Vauclair abbey, the Caverne du Dragon and the many cemeteries punctuate routes alternating open plateau and wooded slopes.

South, Septmonts and the Soissonnais offer a quieter register: the Aisne and Crise valleys, medieval keeps and chalk slopes. Laon is walked around its knoll and its cathedral, visible from thirty kilometres away.
