The Bugey, southern buttress of the Jura, carries most of the routes. Ambérieu-en-Bugey, Hauteville-Lompnes and Virieu-le-Petit give onto limestone plateaux cut by transverse valleys, with sheer cliffs and plunging views.

Culoz opens onto the Grand Colombier, a legendary cycling climb that also goes on foot: 1,500 metres at the top, and a panorama taking in Lake Bourget, Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc on a clear day.

Brégnier-Cordon, to the south, follows the Rhône and its lônes — the river's dead arms — in a flat, wet register, the exact opposite of the plateaux.

When to go — April to November; the Bugey takes snow above 800 m in winter, and the Grand Colombier stays windy even in summer.
