Hikes in Camargue
The Camargue, the vast Rhone delta, offers unique hikes through a landscape of marshes, ponds and sansouires. The flat trails are accessible to all and allow observation of exceptional wildlife: pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses. The best periods are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and bird migration is at its peak. The guardian cabins trail, starting from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, runs along the ponds for 8 km with remarkable birdwatching viewpoints. The Palissade estate, at the mouth of the Rhone, offers accessible trails suitable for pushchairs and people with reduced mobility. Bring a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent — there is virtually no shade on the trails. In winter, the Camargue hosts thousands of common cranes, offering a unique spectacle for birdwatching hikers.
